Sunday, March 19, 2023

We talked about a cross breeding cat between Siamese and Persian cats, called as the Himalayan cat. Please read the previous post: The Friendly Himalayan Cat – Critter 31 | Tanza

Fig 01- A Bengal stares at you

Bengal is a cross breeding cat between a Common household cat (Felis catus) from California and a Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) from Southeast Asia origin.

Jean Mill, a breeder from California conducted cross breeding of these two different species cats in 1963.

We have at least 4 certified breeders who specialize to breed Bengal cats in our state, Louisiana. I know one certified breeder lives in Prairieville area, very close to our city, Baton Rouge.

Fig 02- The Bengal cat looks sleepy

The Bengal in the photos is a male of two years old with a white gray and black stripped or spotted.

He is very friendly, follows the owners on walks or runs. He never roam too far far out of his ability to hear our calling him for dinner or just playing together. The Bengal knows time to go out, sleep and get dinners.

Do you know this kind of cat?

The Portable Stump for Hunting Blind – Sign 38

Wednesday, March 15, 2023

We saw “a strange property” called as the stump when we visit a plant nursery a few days ago.

Fig 01- The stump, a property

We took several photos of stump’s inside and its exteriors. It is said the weight of stump is 325 lb (147 kg)

Inside room is quite spacey with dimensions:

- diameter of 64 inches (163 cm).

- 80 inches (203 cm) in height.

After searching through internet, we understand that this property is used as a conceal place or a temporary shelter and storage for hunters. Hope, they will not be detected by animals.

The Cactus Fruit Sold in the Market – Sign 37

Saturday, March 11, 2023

Some of American farmers, especially in the drought areas grow cactus as a forage crop for their cattle.

Fig 01- Sign for the green cactus fruit

Cactus plants are good for feed of livestock and cattle with several reasons such as they are:

- rich in nutritional values

- source of water intake

- and cheaper compared to commercial fodder.

Moreover, there are plenty of cactus species could generate fruit in the USA. At least, 6 varieties cactus produce edible fruit or fruit which are safe for human consumption.

Fig 02- Look like pears

As suggested by Esther, 2023: Are Cactus Fruits Edible? (6 Cacti with Edible Fruits) that varieties of edible cactus are Peruvian apple cactus, Organ pipe cactus, Hylocereus, Barrel cactus, Opuntia and Saguaro cactus.

The Female Kinglet at the Backyard – Critter 34

Thursday, March 9, 2023

We have talked about a crown Kinglet at previous post:

- A Ruby Crowned Kinglet – Critter 29 | Tanza Erlambang Update

Fig 01- A female Kinglet sitting on the branch.

We just spot a bird we never seen before at backyard a couple days ago. After identification through Google ID, the application said “Kinglet bird.”

So what is different with “a ruby crown Kinglet?”

As I wrote at previous post :”Crown is a sex identification, and red crown refer to males. It is said that crown is important to build communications between a male and a male or a male and a female.”

In addition, you may see a white wing bar (please see Fig 01 above) as one of identifications for female Kinglet.

Fig 02- A garden, Illustration only

Female Kinglets produce eggs just once a year, about 4 to 10 eggs with incubation period for 14 days. Interestingly, both males and females take care their babies.

Have you seen both male and female Kinglets in your areas?

May Insects Kill Human with Their Stings? - Part 1

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

Murder insects were spotted first time in Washington state, USA in May 2020. The insect is called as “Asian giant hornets” with scientific name, Vespa mandarinia.

Fig 01- A bee feeds nectar and pollen of a flower

The insect, actually native to several “warmer” and temperate regions which are far away from the USA.

The warmer and temperate areas include:

- East Asia

- South Asia

- Southeast Asia

- the Russian Far East

Fig 02- Flowers, just illustration

The Asian giant hornets have no natural enemies in the nature, hence they are the apex predator of insects in their environments.

In nature, this biggest size hornet in the world consumes many smaller insects, just few examples are beetles, wasps, bees, hornworms and other smaller hornets.

Fig 03- The Asian giant hornet (credit to Newsweek)

Moreover, the giant hornet may affect bee population, because:

- they attack honey bee hives

- hornets kill adult bees

- they are devouring larvae and pupae.
