Tuesday, January 24, 2023

A beautiful little bird was seen standing on the side door of a car, then he flew away when approached.

Fig 01- A male Ruby Crowned Kinglet

Based on searching through Google image ID, the bird is a Ruby Kinglet with scientific name is a Regulus sp.

Of 6 species from genus Regulus, there are two species living in the USA (North America):

- “the ruby-crowned kinglet (Regulus calendula.)”

- and “the golden-crowned kinglet (Regulus satrapa)”

Since our bird has red crown (please see above photo), hence it is a Ruby Crowned Kinglet.

Crown is a sex identification, and red crown refer to males. It is said that crown is important to build communications between a male and a male or a male and a female.

We may be hearing, watching or reading about hacking or data stolen by hackers almost every day.

Fig 01- Laptop computer, just for illustration.

As you know, the bad things that hackers not only access to our computer to steal whatever inside our computer, but they could also control our computer networks and then prevent us to access our own computer systems.

Strangely, the hackers have specific targets, and changed over the years. Just recent weeks, hackers targeted public infrastructures.

The reasons that infrastructure companies to be targeted it is because hackers have political and even security motivated.

Fig 02- The watch on the street, illustration

In addition, infrastructures are easy target because they have outdated computer systems.

Moreover, the most sectors to be targeted in recent years are following:

- Healthcare organizations

- IT and Telecom

- Retails

- Education and research institutes

Crisis of Chicken’s meat and Eggs – Sign 31

Friday, January 20, 2023

Our neighborhood’s little groceries sell both chicken meat and eggs with unbelievable price tag.

Fig 01- A sign of arriving of little chicks for raising

I believe the price increases by 500% for eggs and 200% for chicken meat compared to last year.

The fact that the availability stock of these two items is uncertain in recent days even in the big groceries.

We just visit the big grocery, Walmart, and found almost empty chicken meat. Out of stock for eggs.

Fig 02- Chicken eggs at a grocery

In case of eggs, there are at least three reasons:

- millions of hens are slaughtered due to bird flu.

- increasing cost of chicken’s feed

- slowing egg production due to fall and winter seasons

Fig 03- Price extremely expensive, reaches US$ 11.09 for 18 eggs

To solve this temporary problem some of my neighbors try to raise chickens

for eggs and meat at their backyard.

Fig 04- A white rooster for meat

They ordered the variety of chickens through neighborhood groceries, the chicks will arrive by next week.

The breeders include white leghorns, Rhode Island red and Buff Orphingtons (please see sign at Fig 01 above).

How about the price of eggs and chicken meat at your place?

Have you Tasted Banana Pepper? - Part 2 - Food Variety 25

Thursday, January 19, 2023

You may read previous post (part 1):

- Have You ever Tasted Banana Pepper?- Part 1 -Food Variety 26

Fig 01- A Banana pepper photo taken from different angle.

I myself use this pepper as an ingredient in the many foods such as curry or mixed with other vegetables.

The taste of peppers is mild hot (heat), even tend to little bit sweet. Heat of pepper can be measured by Scorville Heat Unit (SHU).

Just for comparison, SHU of Banana pepper and Jalapeno:

- Banana peper, 500 SHU

- Jalapeno, about 5,250 SHU

Fig 02- Flowers start blooming, illustration

In term of nutritional values, the pepper has low calories. Rich in fiber, potassium and vitamins (vitamins A and C).

Fig 03- Sweet banana peppers, sold in Walmart

Peppers also contain more beta carotene than other chili. Hence, banana pepper is good for our health.

Have you ever seen or tried Banana peppers?
