Pollinators which Love Coleus Plants – Critter 22

I have seen different colors and shapes of Coleus plants in the gardens across our city.

I found some colors of Coleus plant leaves are:

- yellow

- pink

- green

- red

- purple, orange, etc

What make me wonder that from several sources that there is no blue color for Coleus leaves. I don’t know why.

Basically, the plants respond to light:

- more light cause darker colors

- less light makes plant brighter

Fig 03- Butterfly, a beautiful pollinator

The plant, actually, is including in mint family. They are great air purifiers as indoor plants.

Fig 04- A bee could interest to any blooming plants

In our states, Louisiana, the plant could “blooming” until late summer. The blooming time is quite longer compared to some other plants.

Since plants can’t take cold, under F 50 (C 10) degrees. We might grow in the indoor pots under bright light.

Then bring plants outdoors in the spring when temperature warm enough (higher than F 50 or C 10 degrees).

The blooming Coleus plants are very attractive to pollinators:

- hummingbirds

- butterfly

- bees

- and other pollinators

How about the food lost in the world?

Sure, much more compared to America in terms of percentage and total economic value.

What quite surprising me that food loss is due to stolen by customers, not only from groceries and retailers, but also from restaurants.

However, main thefts of restaurants are their own employee, very rare done by customers!

Fig 04- Fresh meat in the market.

There is long list of foods stolen worldwide, some of most shoplift items are:

- cheese and chocolate

- fresh meat

- alcohol

- seafood

- infant formula

The question then: Why are these foods stolen by people?

Quick and simple answer is that they are “lucrative goods,” especially in developing countries where not all people can afford them.

Edible Mushroom in the World – Food Variety 24

Mushroom is one of my favorites, because, I think it is delicious and one of healthy foods.

There are more than 50 thousand types of mushroom live in tropical region, southern and northern hemispheres.

They are used for many purposes, include medical and food resources. Surprisingly that not very much percentage are poisonous, around 1% to 2% of 50 thousand kinds only.

Many species of commercial mushrooms sold in the market. We could buy in the groceries or small stores or at farmer markets.

However, we understand that about 90 types have been cultivated, and 30 species are developed for commercial purposes.

Some types of famous mushroom with economic values are following:

- Shitake mushroom and Cremini mushroom

- White button mushroom and Maitake mushroom

- Oyster mushroom and Beech mushrooms

- Porcino mushrooms and Portobello mushroom

A Gator in the Neighborhood’s Lake – Critter 21

I have talked about alligators in our state, Louisiana and in our neighborhood at several previous posts.

Recently, our communities have seen an alligator swimming in the one of our neighbor lakes.

What is the problem?

The problem is that we saw the gator in the lake where we considered as a safe lake to play around.

Fig 03- Some gators are seen in this place

Sometimes, people let their dogs to swim in the lake. Hence, it is a warning to anyone who lets their dogs get in the “safe” lake.

Moreover, since gators are wild animals, the fines are huge for anyone who decides to get them.

Other problems concerning with wild alligators: there are more and more reported about their present in our lakes.

Unfortunately, the numbers of Wildlife and Fisheries employee and licensed alligator hunters are limited to remove gators from lakes, rivers or any sites.

In respect to heart diseases, scientists from Harvard and Boston universities (published in American Journal of Hypertension, 2018) observed women and men with high blood pressure.

The number are:

- 55,000 women (the ages of 30 and 55)

- 18,000 men (the ages of 40 and 55)

The finding surprised researchers!

The researchers have seen the result that who consume yogurt regularly (at least twice a week), both men and women lower the risk to have heart diseases.

It is because yogurt consumption relates to:

- reduce high blood pressure, as heart diseases major risk factor.

- increase good HDL cholesterol to help healthy heart.

- lower artery thickness

The Fiber Art in Our Community – Sign 23

When I saw the sign in the one of our community activities, immediately, I asked myself:”what is fiber art?” I just heard for the first time.

Then, I understand that it is a kind of fine art. The art that involve fiber, yarn or fabric. Either natural or synthetic.

The art that involve of significant works in the form of:

- crocheting, knitting, felting and quilting

- embroidery

- weaving and basket weaving

- needle point and many more

I know, but not really familiar with crocheting, knitting and quilting. I think many people love to work or have skills with at least one of these 3 words (crocheting, knitting or quilting)

However, some artists suggested to start with crocheting than knitting, especially for beginners.

It is because Crochet to use one hook, hence minimize techniques. Doing crocheting is easier than knitting.

When I have several cats long long time ago, I love to watch their behaviors in responds to human being.

Sure, there are many interesting signs of cats, however, I noticed several important signs that are:

- wagging their tail when they are approaching and following me

- curling their tails around my legs

- kissing or little biting on my finger's feet.
