A Scared Young Hawk on the Roadside - Critter 94

Tuesday, April 1, 2025
We saw scared and young hawk on the roadside, not far from our house. Wings are clipped and not banded.

Fig - A scared young hawk

We are not sure why anyone would have a hawk with clipped wings, it is not safe from predators.

More than that, we believe it is illegal and cruel (ethical concerns) to limit bird ability to fly or whatever reasons.

The young hawk is likely a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk, we quoted from the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 that "all native hawk species in the United States are federally protected, making it illegal to kill, capture, possess (including feathers, body parts, or eggs), or harass them without a permit."

What do you think?

  1. What a sad sight this is and it is as if his eyes are also asking for help. Because animals do this that has been proven many times. I wonder, Will this one is dumped here. Anyone who treats a bird or other animal this way is guilty of animal cruelty. Hope you took the little one to a shelter if you have one nearby. Because this one has no chance of surviving like this. It must have hopped here asking to be rescued. And if I will see it I will save it too. All animals small or large I save when I see it. Just see this writing https://tinedejong.blogspot.com/2022/06/hommel-gered-uit-de-regen.html and also the video. And it is indeed the bird you mentioned. Greetings, Tine

  3. I haven't seen anything like this. I feel bad for the hawk. I know we do have organizations that do take care of hawks in our forest near here. Thanks for the post.

  4. Letting a hawked with clipped wings outside? That's as cruel as letting a declawed cat outside (FWIW, I would do neither to either animal).
