In our city, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Downy Woodpecker is a frequent visitor in any seasons.
This small, black and white bird is commonly spotted darting around trees (usually dead and dying trees), and shrubs, on the hunt for insects in the city parks, gardens and even in our neighbor backyards.
Both male and female a black and white striped facial pattern and wield a short, sharp bill for pecking into wood to find insects.
The different that male has the bright red patch on the back of its head.
The Woodpeckers play a crucial role in the local ecosystem by controlling insect populations and creating tree cavities used by other birds and animals for nesting.
Many people, especially Birdwatchers also enjoy spotting them due to their unique look and agile movements.
Do you know about a Downy Woodpecker?

The woodpecker looks gorgeous
ReplyDeleteSo interesting, thanks for your sharing
ReplyDeleteHello Tanza a beautiful photo of the woodpecker. The great spotted woodpecker is the most common woodpecker here in the Netherlands. I have only seen this one once in neighbor's garden down in tree but when I wanted to grab the camera it flew away again. They like softer types of trees best. This is because they can carve their nest well in these. Soft tree species are also common here in gardens and parks, where the woodpecker can often be found. And I can hear the woodpecker also in park nearby but have not seen it either. Wish you lovely days hereby.
ReplyDelete...they are a common visitor for us too.
ReplyDeleteI can always hear them, but I rarely see them. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteOh, they can be very noisy, indeed.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, we had a woodpecker that would spend a lot of time on one particular tree in our yard. I enjoyed watching him. Not sure it was the downy woodpecker...but it was beautiful with the red on the back of the head. Great picture Tanza...thank you for sharing...I always look forward to seeing what you post ..
