A Domestic Bunny as a Pet at Home – Critter 26

I saw rabbits wandering around in the neighborhood many times. They seem anxious at outside if they are staying in the long time or more than a day.

I don’t know how many neighbors have bunny as their pets. In term of space, we need “a huge place” or at least “appropriate space” to let rabbits moving around.

As reported by Saveafluff (2022) that wild rabbits need to run about 4.8 km (3 miles) per day.

Comparatively, as pets, rabbits should spend around 3 hours. Sure, the owner should find secure outdoor for their pets to run around, interact with others, and stretch their little legs.

What does secure outdoor means for domestic rabbits? At least, the places have these 3 characteristics:

- places which have shades from hot sun.

- predators free

- rabbits can’t escape from owners

It would take some time to find a good solution for them. Outside is best.

Lovely rabbit. I do feel worried for them being out. But I have seen some who really know how to defend themselves too. Especially, living on a farm.

We have lots of wild rabbits, but I'm not aware of people having them as pets around here. I wish I didn't have the wild ones, they eat too many of my plants and flowers and leave too many piles of poo in the yarn which I see and clean up everytime I mow. I spray plants to try to keep them away, but everytime it rains you have to start over again. Letting pet rabbits out I think would cause problems here due to hawks, skunks, and coyottes. I've seen a few wild rabbits out and about but never inside as a pet.

We have always had wild rabbits wherever we have lived. They really have to watch out for the foxes and hawks. We also have had lots of pet rabbits. My husband was involved in 4H as a kid and so were our kids and grandkids. They make wonderful pets but need care and cleaning regularly. We had a large hutch for them outside which gave them plenty of space and enclosure.
