You are so right about the poison ivy burning on the firewood. You have to be so careful when you pick out the wood. As I mentioned before, we use our gas fireplace and love it!

When we burned wood it was usually birch or ash. We bought from a dealer who cuts it and then lets it sit for a year to dry out. The wood burnt well.

Fireplaces are so cozy. My parents used one growing up but switched over to a wood burning stove which was cleaner and safer. I love fires but would be uncomfortable with one in my house.
ReplyDeleteeasy to use electric one...

I don't have a working fireplace, so we don't burn wood here. I would like to though because I think it makes the house smell so cozy.

One would be less likely to burn poison sumac or oak indoors, but poison ivy grows onto trees one would need to remove it before burning or taking inside. All three can make smoke more toxic in wildfires or even controlled burns. I would add cheery as a good wood that gives off a nice scent, but it does pop a lot when burning.

In Portugal there is what is called energy poverty, although the winter is short, it is very cold and the houses were not built for those temperatures, so people in general use wood to keep warm, but I cannot say what type of wood treats, perhaps pine and eucalyptus!
